How does the average business day start out for accounting firm owners? The answer tends to be: slowly. This is doubly true on Mondays, it seems. After weekends, holidays, a fun night or a slew of other possibilities, for most of us, work is the last place we want to be, especially at an early hour.
But getting off on the wrong foot can be extremely detrimental and set the pace for the entire day or even week. Unproductive mornings often lead to lethargic afternoons, and by 3 o’clock, we’re all looking at the clock, waiting until we can punch out and couch surf.
So what’s the best way to drive ourselves to get work done in the morning so we can be productive and accomplish even involved tasks? Everyone has different motivations, but with some dedication, we can all fulfill responsibilities, and done right, we might even be able to skip out a few minutes early.
Eat and drink right
We’ve all heard our moms tell us while growing up that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. She was right, as much as we might not like to admit it, and it still holds true now.
According to Inc. Magazine, the best thing to do is to drink 16 ounces of water first thing in the morning to rehydrate, and you should keep this up during the rest of the day. Becoming dehydrated is a surefire way to put a strain on efficiency, so why not avoid that altogether? The source also recommended starting the morning off with some sort of protein.
Working out after just waking up is probably one of the least appealing things to many of us. Inc. said that the benefits are great though and can keep people going in a natural way throughout the day.
At the very least, doing some mini exercises like leg lifts or stretching at your desk when you become bored or tired in the afternoon can raise endorphins and provide a big enough boost of energy to get through the rest of the workday.
Review a to-do list
When just walking in the office, maybe after getting a cup of coffee, making a to-do list is usually a good idea. It can help us remain aware of the things we absolutely have to get done during the next eight hours, and keeping these requirements at the back of our minds can be a good motivator.
Separating what absolutely has to be accomplished – along with their deadlines – from those things that can be pushed back safely is a good tip. So even if you hit an afternoon slump, you’ve got everything crucial out of the way.
